A runaway win was scored by the Hawke’s Bay Rugby fifteen against Wairarapa today, the score being: Hawke’s Bay 56, Wairarapa nil. The match was played at McLean Park, Napier, before an attendance of nearly 5000.
j Hawke’s Bay forwards dominated the game throughout, although in the secf ond spell the backs, who saw plenty . of the ball in both spells, showed up much better than they did in the first spell and several tries were the result . of heady, fast back movements. Wairarapa were simply outclassed and ; never looked like scoring. The nearest . they came to it was by way of penalty ’ kicks, but O’Callaghan was unlucky on t two occasions. The teams were:—Haw- ■ ke’s Bay: Dyer, Fox, Murray, Apsey, Le Quesne, Bradley, Clothier (captain), Wilson, Ward, Bowman, Reid, J. O’Brien, Dallimore, Dalton, Jackson. After Hawke’s Bay had scored another try, Wairarapa swept into the Bay 25. Hawke’s Bay quickly carried play back to Wairarapa territory and from a breakaway at about halfway Le Quesne scored. Hawke’s Bay 23 Wairarapa 0. Percy had a chance to open Wairarapa’s score from a penalty, but the kick went wide. Fox missed the kick. Hawke’s Bay 31, Wairarapa 0.
At this stage O’Connor retired with an injury, being replaced by Matheson, The next scorer was Fox, who crossed after receiving the ball from Murray. • His kick missed. OPAKI v GREYTOWN. (By “Touchline.”) The Opaki and Greytown teams met at Greytown on Saturday, Opaki winnings by 11 points to 8, after a closely contested game. The winners were without Fergus, Duncan, Taplin and Seymour and were consequently somewhat disorganised. Opaki kicked off and were soon attacking, Hargood fielding nicely to put in a fine run and send on to Costello who was thrown to touch in Greytown’s 25 flag. Within
ten minutes the yellow’s were awarded a free kick, and Workman landed a goal. From a scrum in midfield, Marshall secured, sent out smartly to Morgan who cut in nicely and sent to Hargood. The latter was collared a few yards from the line. An infringement gave Greytown relief. From the lineout Condon got the ball and sent back to Marshall who short punted for Hargood to gain possession and beat the opposing backs and score a great try. Costello’s kick fell under the bar. A forward rush saw Fuge go over for a try, Workman converting with a fine kick and so the first spell ended Greytown 8 points, Opaki 3. Opaki attacked strongly from the kick-off and kept Greytown defending. Condon took the ball from practically every lineout and started many forward rushes. From a scrum on yellow’s line Costello went over for a try which he converted. Shortly after yellow’s were penalised and Costello kicked a goal. The rest of the game was mostly in favour of reds but no further score took place, Opaki winning by 11 points to 8. Greytown forwards played splendidly. Led by Workman, Falconer and Playle they gave reds many anxious moments but the defence was sound. The backs were too closely watched to go far but Whaite, Fuge, Flood and McKay were conspicuous for sound play. Opaki’s forwards played a fine open game, Condon being excellent on lineout and loose work. Stincar, Clarke, Roygard and Chapel played fine games in open rushes. Solomon was splendid in the scrums as also were Goddin and Oliver. The backs,
although new to each other were verysound, Marshall at half fed his backs nicely and was sound on defence. Hargood and Costello played splendidly. Morgan gave glimpses of his old form, cutting in nicely on several occasions. Guvnor, although injured played very safely. Norman, who has been out of action for some time, was in good form and will be a great help to the team. Hunt was safe at full back. ASSOCIATION CODE Representative soccer matches yesterday resulted as follows: Wellington 3, Canterbury 3; Taranaki 2, Wanganui 2.
