BETTING ON RUGBY

SMALL FINE IMPOSED AFTER COSTLY PROCEEDINGS (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A fine of a shilling without costs, was imposed by Mr J.'H. Luxford, S.M., on Stewart John France, who was charged with inviting persons, about April 14 last, to make bets on the result of Rugby football matches played in Wellington on April 17. This was a case in which a judge allowed an appeal in the Supreme Court, ordering the case to be remitted to the magistrate, with an opinion that defendant should be convicted.’ Counsel said possibly the best safeguard against offences of this nature was the fate of this one. It had cost defendant £27 13s 7d, and his total income was £4 65.. He submitted that in the circumstances the cost of proceedings in Court would be a sufficient penalty. The Crown no doubt was satisfied to have an interpretation of the section of the Gaming Act under consideration.
