CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE & COURSE Views on Racing Facts and Fancies ADVANCE PLANE COMES RIGHT
(By
“The Cynic.”)
An overdue winning turn came the way of Advance Plane in the Waitohu Hack Handicap at Otaki, in which he led from start to finsh. He' was being pressed on the home turn by Fafner, but in the straight he slipped away to score decisively by three lengths. This was Advance Plane’s first win since being secured by Mr F. Sarten, of New Plymouth, who raced Aussie Ra, but he has been numerous times in the minor places and not always too lucky at that. Last season he had a couple of successes when raced by his breeder, W. Gill, and trained at Hawera. He is now a member of R. Johnson’s team. A five-year-old brown gelding, Advance Plane is a son of the Martian horse Warplane and the Elysian—Lady Edith mare Elysian Lady. Lady Edith was by the great Advance, hence Advance Plane’s name. The gelding is not very big, but he sticks on well and should go a longer distance when required. In view of a programme taking in the July meeting at Trentham, Ned Cuttie has been kept in useful exercise, mainly pace-work, a course of treatment which has resulted in the four-year-old making splendid progress. At New Plymouth on Saturday he covered two circuits at half-pace in his usual free style, and he showed nice tractability throughout the essay.
Although a trifle on the small side, Ned Cuttie has grown outwardly and his solid condition is testimony to the training methods employed by R. Johnson, who has got wonderful results with Mr Somerton’s horse since the gelding came to New Plymouth. There has been nothing of a strenuous nature exacted from Merial in the short time she has been visiting New Plymouth tracks, but she bears a better and brighter appearance and is obviously progressing very satisfactorily. Merial may be a star of. sprinters in Taranaki next season, with sound Auckland form to her credit, as on performances she will hold her own with Taranaki’s best. For the present W. Mantle is confining activities to the rising three-year-old Sang Bleu (King Lu—Lady Mestor), although Glenthawn also makes an appearance at the tracks in the capacity of hack for Mantle. The New Zealand-bred Mala, who proved a sensation on his first visit to Australia, and was subsequently purchased by Mr Alan Cooper for 7000 guineas, is to be sent to Brisbane almost immediately. It is expected he will contest the Doomben Newmarket and Cup, run on June 25 and July 2 respectively. Arrangements have been made for Mala to be trained at Sandgate.
