BASKETBALL

HINTS TO REFEREES. Efficient refereeing is invaluable to any game. Not only can a referee make the game enjoyable, but the standard of play can be improved when the game is strictly controlled. The reverse, unfortunately, is just as true. The main essentials to good refereeing are: —

1. A complete knowledge of the rules of the game. .

2. Experience in the practical application of the rules. 3. A referee should strictly enforce all rules, but particular attention must be given to the operation of the advantage rule. \ 4. A referee should be alert, should rivet his entire attention on the game, and should give his rulings quickly and decisively. Hesitancy diminishes the referee’s control of the game. 5. A referee should have a comprehensive view of the game in order not only to sight the player in possession of the ball, but also to detect such infringements as blocking, holding, pushing, etc. 6. To inspire the confidence of the players a referee should adopt a calm, firm, impersonal and cheerful manner. He should at all times maintain the dignity of his office. 7. The greatest obstacle to good Basketball is personal contact. Not only does this mar the standard of the game and create ill feeling amongst players, but it may cause serious injury.
