Asked in the House of Commons if he could state whether Germany intended to default on its external debt Sir John Simon (Chancellor of the Exchequer) replied: “As far as I am aware, There is no foundation for the rumour, referred to recently in certain newspaper, that Germany intends to default on its external debt as it existed prior to the incorporation of Austria into the German Reich.”
