A Lithuanian labourer, who emigrated to Ontario and found a goldfield. died recently at the age of 54. leaving £250,000.

The powerful braking capacity and easy springing of the modern car was the cause of an unusual type of accident in Cathedral square, Christchurch, a few days ago. An old type of vehicle was going south, followed by a much later model, and at the pedestrian crossing outside the Cathedral the first car stopped suddenly to allow a pedestrian the right of way. The driver of the car behind did not notice that the other vehicle had stopped until too late, and ran close up before applying his brakes violently. The front of his car dipped with the application of the brakes and caught in the rear bumpers of the other vehicle, lifting the back off the ground. The united efforts of the two drivers, however, extricated the cars without difficulty.
