A PITIFUL DISPLAY

VICIOUS WICKET O'REILLY REAPS A HARVEST. AUSTRALIANS WORRIED BY SINFIELD. By Telegraph—Press Association Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, June 2. The weather was cloudy with a bitter wind blowing when the Aus-tralia-Gloucester game began today. The wicket at the start appeared slow and easy and was not helpful to the bowlers when the County opened. The batsmen, however, did not profit from the bleak conditions.

McCormick appeared to be valueless as a bowler in the conditions which existed. Allen batted brightly but Barnet I was troubled by the spin bowlers, and was nearly an hour making fifteen runs. SENSATIONAL BOWLING. Gloucester’s score at lunch was 2 for 61, but upon resumption of play the wicket was difficult and O'Reilly reaped a harvest. He took 5 wickets for 3 runs off four overs. After lunch eight Gloucester wickets fell in half an hour for an additional seventeen runs. BATSMEN VERY NERVOUS. The batsmen were so nervous that they scarcely attempted a stroke. The wicket could not fully account for the pitiful display. The Australians opened their innings at 2.55 o’clock. The batting of Brown and Badcock was dull, but Gloucester had nobody to exploit the vice in the wicket. After correct and restrained batting for an hour Brown was caught at fine leg. McCabe was beaten playing a purely defensive stroke. O’REIILY HITS GALLANTLY. Badcock and Hassett played defensively and awaited loose balls to score. Upon their dismissal wickets fell quickly, but Ward Stonewalled while O’Reilly hit gallantly ui’til stumps were drawn. Sinfield, a slow bowler, was very accurate and worried all the batsmen who were unable to penetrate his leg side field. The scores were as follow: — GLOUCESTER. First Innings. Barnett, lbw, b O’Reilly 15 Emmett, b Fleetwood-Smith 0 Allen, lbw, b O’Reilly 41 Lyon, b O’Reilly 5 Crapp, c Fleetwood-Smith, b O'Reilly 0 Neale, b Fleetwobd-Smith 0 Parker, c Waite, b O’Reilly 0 Sinfield, lbw, b Fleetwood-Smith 0 Wileon, not out 3 Tyler, st Barnett, b O’Reilly 0 Cranfield, run out 3 Extras 11 Total 78 Bowling: McCormick 0 for 10; Waite 0 for 3; O’Reilly 6 for 22; FleetwoodSmith 3 for 32.

CRITICS SURPRISED. AT REST’S GOOD SHOWING. (Recd This Day, 10.40 a.m.) LONDON. June 2. The newspaper critics are surprised at the good score made by The Rest against England. They do not think that The Rest should have scored so many runs, indicating that the English attack will not be good enough against Australia. Although Edrich and Hutton put on 113 for England’s first wicket their batting was painfully slow. The scores were as follow: —
