PASSING CARS
VALUE OF WHITE CENTRE LINE ON HIGHWAYS PHOTOGRAPHIC PROOF Motorists travelling on the Master-ton-Carterton Highway may have noticed that recently a centre line has been dotted out for their benefit. The reasons for the marking of the road may not be apparent to the average user, though actually they are of considerable value in reducing maintenance costs.
Before the definition of the centre line photographs taken of passing cars showed that they tended to swerve right on to the side of the road when passing each other, so much so that they passed with a width of almost five or six feet between them, and the left-hand wheels in some cases travelled on the gravel at the side of the road. This practice caused considerable weai- on the shoulders of the highway. In other districts where the roads have been similarly marked, photographs disclose that the cars pass each other much closer and without leaving the.bitumen. It is stated that an improvement has already been noticed on the Carterton highway since the road was marked.
