FARMERS’ UNION

WOMEN’S DIVISION. MEETING IN MASTERTON. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held on Wednesday last in the Chilton Buildings. Mrs Ken Groves presided, and the following members of the committee were present: Mesdames Wright, Burling, Gawith, Engstrom, Cottle, Donald and Rue. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Stuart and Jensen. A letter was received from Mrs H. W. Thompson, of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, thanking the Division for their donation towards their work. Mr H. M. Boddington (hon. auditor) wrote thanking members for their gift made in appreciation for services rendered by him. Mrs A. Donald (treasurer), reported that the takings at the monthly jumble sale amounted to £1 12s 9d. Mesdames Coe and Gawith were appointed to preside over the next jumble sale. It was decided that Wairarapa delegates to the Dominion conference will meet in the Division room, Masterton, on July 1 to discuss matters in connection with conference work. It was decided to provide luncheon for the visitors. Mrs Gawith, delegate to the interProvincial conference, held recently at Palmerston North, reported that Professor- Peren, Principal of Massey College, had addressed the delegates, and informed them that for a fee of £5 5s inclusive of tuition and accommodation, a three weeks’ course in Home Science for girls was provided at the College. He asked the delegates to make this information known in their respective districts. The meeting expressed itself strongly in favour of Bible reading in schools. As it is the custom for the Division to provide clothing in necessitous cases it was decided to make public appeal for warm clothing for children’s wear. It was decided to hold an Educational Week for girls at the end of June. Afternoon tea was served at the conclusion of the meeting.
