A MODERN DAIRY
MANY UNIQUE APPLIANCES. THE VALUE OF CONCENTRATES. A Masterton resident who recently paid a visit to Newlands Ltd. dairy farm at Newlands, near Johnsonville, was greatly impressed with the modern and unique appliances used in the dairy which provides a large portion of the Wellington milk supply. The surroundings of the dairy itself are up-to-date in every respect. The whole of the yard is metalled and the floor of the milking shed is of concrete. An 18-cow plant is used. Instead of the cows being held in the bail by the usual method, a swivel appliance is used in which the cow’s head is placed, and the animal can move its head in any direction without inconvenience to • itself. In front of each cow is a small drinking trough which, acting on the ball-cock system, fills with water as soon as the cow places her nozzle in it. There are also in front of each animal a feeding receptacle containing concentrated food which is fed regularly throughout the year to the cows. A rigid test is made of each cow, and if an animal does not come up to a certain milk and cream standard it is disposed of. The manager stated that the system of concentrated feeding bad proved of exceptional value in connection with keeping up the quantity and quality of the milk supply, especially from an economic point of view.
