PROPOSED CONVALESCENT HOME A movement for the establishment of a women’s and children’s convalescent home at Rotorua, was outlined at a meeting held on Wednesday when the support of local residents was solicited for the project. The Mayor (Mr f>. L. Taverner), presided, and there was a small attendance, representative of all the local social activities. Mrs T. R. Barrer, Masterton, addressed the meeting, pointing out that there was at present no place for convalescent women in poor financial circumstances to go to except the hospitals, which were not at all suitable. It was proposed to purchase a farm on which, the home could be built to accommodate about 50 people. There would be a trained staff and in addition probationers would be trained in the care of children. The products of the farm would be used for the consumption of the home, and it was hoped that in time the home and farm would be self-supporting. The amount required to set the scheme in motion was £30,000. That, said Mrs Barrer, seemed a large amount, but she reminded her listeners that larger amounts had been raised on previous occasions.. The hospital boards would be asked to contribute and patients who were able to would be asked to pay ten shillings per week. If they were unable to pay no charge would ' be made. The branches of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union had had the idea in mind for years, but could do nothing owing to lack of funds. Mr J. R. Overton, Rotorua, interim secretary and organiser, also outlined the proposal. After some discussion it was stated by those present that they would report to the institutions which they represented when the matter would no doubt be considered more fully. OBITUARY. The death took place at Auckland on Wednesday of Mr William E. Allen,' formerly manager of the Carterton branch of the Bank of New Zealand. Deceased leaves a widow, and two daughters. Tim daughters are Mrs Douglas Hunter (Auckland) and Mrs L. J. Fairbrother (Carterton). Mr and Mrs Fairbrother left yesterday for Auckland. DRIVERS’ LICENCES.
