NATIONAL STRIKE AVERTED
IN BRITAIN • THE WAGES OF ENGINEERS. MANY REARMAMENT WORKERS. (Recd This Day, 11-15 a.m.) LONDON, June 1. A national strike over the wages of 350,000 engineers, 'thousands of whom are engaged on rearmament, was averted by one vote at the annual meeting of the Amalgamated Engineering Union. The president, Mr Little, intervened in the debate three times, warning delegates against a grave decision which appeared certain. The vote against a strike was 20 to 19.
