EXCLUSION BU.L REJECTED IN OTTAWA
LANGUAGE TERT DECLARED INEFFECTIVE BRITISH COLUMBIA ATTACKS GOVERNMENT (Recd This Dav. 12.55 p.m.) OTTAWA, June 1. A Bill introduced in the House of Commons by Mr A. W. Neill (British Columbia), to have the Government exclude Japanese by means of a language test, was defeated by 87 votes to 39. Mr Neill claimed that most of the Japanese coming to Canada were labourers.
Mr Crerar, Minister for Immigration, declared that the move would defeat its own purpose. He said the Japanese would learn English and immigration would increase. Mr Neill warmly attacked the Government as being afraid that Japan would become lukewarm towards Britain. He alleged that a secret agreement existed with Japan. This Mr Crerar denied. TOTAL EXCLUSION URGED BY ORGANISATION OF WOMEN (Recd This Day, 1.5 p.m.) VANCOUVER, June 1. The Imperior Order of Daughters of the Empire convention adopted a resolution urging the Government to terminate the gentleman’s agreement governing Japanese immigration in favour- of total exclusion.
