HOTEL LICENCES

WAIRARAPA COMMITTEE MEETING. ONE APPLICATION OPPOSED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Licensing Committee was held in Carterton this morning, Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presiding. Clifford Hawkins Pattie was granted a permanent transfer of the licence of the Foresters’ Arms Hotel, Greytown. The following were granted publicans’ licences: Gerald William Corkery, Foresters’ Arms, Greytown; Thomas Hanley, Marine Hotel, Whakataki; Charles James O’Connell, Martinborough Hotel, Martinborough; Robert Douglas Vance, Club Hotel, Greytown. Renewals of publicans’ licences were granted to the following applicants:— George Arthur Vincent, Marquis of Normanby Hotel, Carterton; Thomas Patrick Hampson, Tinui Hotel, Tinui; Nellie Gordon, Trentham Hotel; William Arthur Jones, Junction Hotel, Blairlogie; James Wilson Griffith, Gladstone Hotel; Frederick Conrad Yule, Taratahi Hotel; Albert Edward Izzard, Royal Oak Hotel, Cartertpn; Elizabeth Quin, Club Hotel, Carterton; Michael Alexander Quin, Club Hotel, Martinborough; Stephen Frederick Cooper, Taueru Hotel; Edward Perry, Empire Hotel, Featherston; Leslie Webster Lambess, Tauherenikau Hotel; John de Pubron Manson, Greytown Hotel; Ellen Sim, Royal Hotel, Featherston; Thomas Fisher, Provincial Hotel, Upper Hutt. Frederick Broughton Brough, Lake Ferry Hotel, was granted a renewal of an accommodation licence, and the W.F.C.A., Greytdwn, was granted a renewal of a wholesale licence. “The committee is of the opinion that this man is not a suitable person to hold a permanent licence,” observed Mr Lawry, after the hearing of an application by Michael Richard Wallace for a publican’s licence for the Morison’s Bush Hotel. Objections were raised by Sergeant G. Paine, on behalf of the Police, and it was stated in evidence that applicant had been convicted of drunkenness and also for Sunday trading while holding a temporary licence. Reference was also made to an alleged “incident” in Masterton last Saturday night. The hearing of the application was finally adjourned until June 29.
