“RETURN OF THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL.”
At the State Theatre tonight there will again be shown an outstanding picture, “The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel,” the rollicking sequel to Baroness Orczy’s “Scarlet Pimpernel.” Barry K. Barnes in his first screen part as Sir Percy Blakeney, ostensibly a fop and close friend of the Prince of Wales, and in reality the leader of the famous League of the Scarlet Pimpernel, organised by himself at the outbreak of the French Revolution to save aristocrats from the guillotine. Opposite him is Sophie Stewart playing Lady Blakeney, devoted wife of the Scarlet Pimpernel. She extorts a promise from him never to return to France," but is captured herself and used to trap Percy into the hands of Robespierre’s agents. They are principally supported by Margaretta Scott as Theresia Cabarrus, the reigning actress in Paris, who is forced into playing the spy by Chauvelin in order to save Tallien, her lover, from the guillotine, and James Mason in the role of Jean Tallien. The excellent story and superb acting make this film one of outstanding merit.
