To be without coal in the richest coalmining area of New Zealand was the unusual experience of members of the Arbitration Court at a sitting at Westport. When the temperature began to fall and an icy snap became noticeable in the air, a call was made for a fire, and Court officials made a fruitless attempt to find coal. There was none in the building and a search of the adjoining police quarters did not produce any. The Court had to continue its sitting in a temperature which had reached a low level.
