STREET LIGHTS
CARTERTON SYSTEM NEEDING OVERHAUL. LAMPS TOO FAR APART. The whole lighting system of the town needed overhauling, stated Councillor C. E. Stevens at last night’s meeting of the Carterton Borough Council. Even the lights in the main street were too far apart, he added. Councillors agreed that the' street lighting was bad, particularly in the back streets. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, said the Power Board last year had considered the question of renewing the lighting system in the town, but it was found that it would be necessary to erect a new transformer at a cost of £1,500. He hoped that with improving finances the board would now proceed with the erection of the transformer. It would be probably better for the council to wait and see what service was given by the* new 100 watt lamps before taking action. A councillor: “It would be better for the Power Board to spend the money on the Carterton street lights instead of on shifting the head office to Masterton.”
