LECTURE CONCERT

PROGRAMME AT WAIRARAPA COLLEGE.

The first of a series of lecture concerts was given by the Masterton Orchestra at Wairarapa College last night. There was a large attendance of scholars and adults. The string section of the orchestra was dealt with last night, the origin and development of the different instruments being described by the conductor, Mr J. Candy. Other instruments will be dealt with at future lecture recitals.

A splendid programme of musical and vocal selections was presented by the orchestra and assisting artists and the entertainment was most enjoyable. Some of the items had to be presented three times. The programme was as follows: —Orchestra, “Marche Militaire” (Schubert), “Peter Schmoll” (Weber), “The Gipsy Princess” (E. Kalman), "Shepherd's Hey” and “Mock Morris” (Percy Grainger); “Berceuse” (A. Iljinsky), “Mazurka” (A. Scriabine), “Barcarolle” (A. Arensky); "Hyde Park” (Roger Jalowics). Vocal, Mr L. Dilmot Wales, “Still as the Night” (Carl Bohm), “The Two Grenadiers” (R. Schumann), “To the Forest” (Tschaikowsky) and "Oh, Could I But Express in Song” (L. Malashkin). ’Cello solos, Mr E. F. Wilson, “Vorspiel” (C. Reinecke) and “Bouree” (G. F. Handel).
