THEFT OF MILESTONES

HOW IT WAS STOPPED. English railway officials found the greatest difficulty in putting an end to the theft of milestones from the Central Indian Railway. Again and again they were dug up and erected in the temples of nearby villages. At length, on the advice of a Brahmin, the railway authorities smeared the milestones with the sacred vermilion which the Hindu will not dare to touch. The milestones are never disturbed now, but processions of pilgrims frequently approach a particularly large milestone, anoint it with oil, and pray before it.
