DESTRUCTION OF FLAX

CLAIM FOR DAMAGES SUCCEEDS. ECHO OF MANAWATU FIRE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A verdict of plaintiffs for £2750 was returned by the jury in the Supreme Court yesterday in the case in which the Wellington Flax Company sued Sir Kenneth Douglas for £5OOO damages. The action arose from a fire which destroyed a large area of flax at Mangaroa in November, plaintiffs alleging that Sir Kenneth, who owns an adjoining property, was responsible for the fire. The defence was a complete denial. The hearing, which was presided over by Mr Justice Blair, began on Tuesday last. The jury were out three hours and a quarter. Mr F. C. Spratt, for defendant, was granted leave to move within 14 days for a new trial.
