Mr Bruce Riddell, the well-known Bush and Wairarapa Rugby representative footballer, has accepted a position in Hawke’s Bay, and will play for the Hastings Club. The Rev G. V. Gerard, vicar of St Matthew’s Church, Auckland (formerly of Pahiatua), and Mrs Gerard, have returned to Auckland from a visit to Mr Gerard’s parents in Canterbury. The death occurred at Palmerston North of Mr W. Francis, a former resident of Pahiatua, at the age of 83 years. His widow was formerly Miss Mary Williscroft, of Carterton. whom he married 62 years ago. The Rt Rev F. A. Bennett. Bishop of Aotearoa, will visit Australia in July to represent the Anglican Church in New Zealand at the celebration of the centenary of Samuel Marsden, and to fulfil a number of other engagements.
Services in memory of the late Rev T. Fielden Taylor, who was missioner to the city of Wellington from 1919 until his death on May 29, 1937, were held at the Wellington City Mission yesterday. In the morning the Rt Rev Dr T. H. Sprott, former Bishop of Wellington, dedicated a memorial pulpit to Mr Taylor. A service for South African veterans was conducted by a former chaplain to the New Zealand forces in South Africa, the Rev D. C. Bates, in the afternoon. The Rev H. E. K. Fry, Lower Hutt, took the evening service. All the gatherings were largely attended. Between them Mr and Mrs P. Hawksworth, of Masterton, hold 29 official badminton titles, which is a performance unequalled in the history of the game in the Dominion. They were eagerly watched at the interprovincial tournament which concluded at Palmerston North yesterday by a crowd of spectators. It is understood they will be defending all their titles. Mr Hawksworth holds 17: New Zealand, Otago, Hawke’s Bay, North Island and Wairarapa men’s singles, doubles and combined doubles, and Wellington singles and men's doubles. Mrs Hawksworth holds the New Zealand and Otago women’s doubles and combined doubles. North Island, Wellington, Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa women's singles, Wellington women’s doubles, and Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa combined doubles.
