CURRENT TOPICS FRi Views on Racing VALMINT ON ... . (By Although he has failed in his latest races, Valmint has demonstrated by his good work on the track that he is about to show a return to his best form. Like other members of his family, he revels in soft going and it will be surprising if he fails to achieve some success during the winter. Last year he finished second in the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie, being beaten only a head by Boomerang, and in view of the fact that he has 7.5 on this occasion, compared with 7.7 twelve months ago, his prospects have to be highly regarded. An interesting feature of Valmint’s candidature for the Cornwall Handicap is that his grand-dam, Loloma, won the race in 1916, and his dam, Lomint, in 1926. Loloma and Lomint, were both owned by Mr B. Goldwater, who also races Valmint, and the family is one that is noted for success in winter conditions. Another good member of the family was the .1922 Great Northern Hurdles winner Poanui. The record ot the family should not be lost sight ot if the going happens to be very heavy when Valmint has to compete at the Auckland winter meeting. H. N. Wiggins .will ride Valmint. That rider piloted him last year; he also won on Sunny Sky in 1932 and Lord Vai in 1935. Fragment; who finished second tc •Easter Rush at the South Canterbury Meeting isl.a four-year-old filly by Maxegin—Nanette, and is trained by .O. E. Hooper. The dam, Nanette, is by Author Dillon from Llama, by Lord Chancellor—Little Princess, who was by Prince Imperial from a mare supposed' to be of thoroughbred blood. The winner, Easter Rush, is also of rather short breed, by Rose Queen, his dam, was by Nelson Bingen—Teresita, by Marvin Wilkes—Young McKinney, from a mare by the thoroughbred, Cloth of Gold.

Early in the year the Caulfield trainer G. Jones bought a couple of

‘ 'J -A* • •”* Conception (G. Linton) and Contract (J. Bromby) set out for a round over the hurdles. After Contract had run off at the first, taking his mate with him, they went on to jump four obstacles safely, though both hit the last flight. Surcoat (J. Murfitt) and Monastic (A. Leach) as a mate over five hurdles, which they cleared in attractive style at a fair pace. Guilder (M. P. Reilly), started behind them, and gave a dashing display, doing the circuit much faster, as she made up a lot of leeway on the journey.

Acceptable was given a turn in the jumping ring, and went at his task in creditable style.

It is reported that the Trentham trained T. Yates, who brought Rona Bay into such excellent form last season, but who has been without a horse this term, has a couple of rising two-year-olds, occupying his. attention at present. Both promise to turn out useful performers. One of the youngsters is a bay filly , by Inflation out of the Diacquenod—Avola mare Divola, as sister to Debut, and she is owned by Mif A. H. Devine, of Petone. who bought her at the yearling sales for 321 guineas. She is small, but very similar in appearance and facial markings to Rona Bay, though there is no relationship between them. The other youngster, who is not so far forward, is a chestnut filly by Defoe from the Paper Money—Santaline mare Santa Anna, a sister to Matorni (a winner in New Zealand and Australia) and a half-sister to Jack Tar. She is bred on a similar cross to Defaulter, and may prove a cheap purchase for Mr R. Meadows, of Wellington, who bought her for 75 guineas.

F. D. Jones has made another start with the four-year-old Cerne Abbas and the three-year-old Royal Chief. The latter has been spelling since Easter, while Cerne Abbas has been out since the end of January. They look bright and healthy after their rest and will be started on a preparation for the spring. They are to be nominated for the big handicaps in Australia, and Jones expects to leave for Sydney at the end of July, provided they go qn all right during the interval.

Although he failed to finish closer than fourth in the Waikato Hurdles at Te Rapa, Innes Lad was responsible for a very creditable performance, and he is an improver who appears to be a good prospect for a hack hurdle race at the Auckland Racing Club’s Winter Meeting at Ellerslie. Like most of the progeny of Little England, Innes Lad goes well in Soft going, and it is evident from his latest performance that he is staying on better than formerly. Innes Lad is trained at Te Rapa, by R. T. Cotter.

At Hawera on Saturday morning, Student Prince was schooled over three hurdles and gave a bright display. He had his first lesson last Wednesday, and he reveals exceptional promise in his new role. His mother, Happy Hit, was a fine jumper until she went wrong, and Student Prince may attain great heights if he fulfils the promise already shown.

Four young horses in Dennis Dowling, a half-brother to Janet Gaynor, Pilot’s Love and a half-brother to Pink Del were given a run down the straight at Wingatui on a recent morning. The first-named went off in front of his companions and came home on his own. The other three were fairly well matched.

At the Invercargill winter meeting, Wild career won the Awarua Handicap with 8.6 by a nose from Island Linnet (7.0), with Amelita (8.1) and Cintilla (7.0?) unplaced. In the Birthday Handicap the weights allotted are: Wild Career 8.3, Amelita 7.11, Island Linnet 7.7 and Cintilla 7.7 Wild Career, in the Birthday Handicap, meets Island Linnet on 101 b better terms, Amelita on 1 lb worse terms, and Cintilla on 9flb better terms. Wild Career also won the Riverton Cup, and the above figures suggest that the Birthday Handicap weight has been framed cn too low a scale or on a desire not to crush a probable nonstayer as the top-weight. The adjustments do not appear to give Island Linnet, Amelita or Cintilla much chance on their latest form. Wild Career won the Riverton Cup with 7.10, and Amelita, a close third with 8.1, meets him on 11 lb better terms in the Birthday Handicap. High Glee was fourth in the Riverton Cup with 7.12, and won on the second day with 7.12, and Amelita 8.3 in third place. High Glee meets Wild .Career on 41b better terms in the Birthday Handicap than when they met at Riverton.

Miss Dorothy Paget’s 15,000 guineas colt by Fairway from Golden Hair has been named Coldeh Payne, after Miss Paget’s great-uncle. Most members of the Whitney family include Payne in their Christian names.

The veteran steeplechaser Quinopal has been a follower of the Birchwood Hounds in recent weeks with a view to contesting the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at the Dunedin meeting. In spite of his age Quinopal looks well.

Araboa is reported to be galloping well at Wingatui and he may be on the eve of a return to the good form she showed last season. A three-year-old half-sister, by Weathervane, to Araboa had her first gallop, assisted by Slayer, on Tuesday. The filly handled herself well.

A. S. McKay, has Saltspray and Radius Rod under his charge now. Another horse to be taken over by the Wingatui trainer this week is Drink Up. Saltspray has been entered for the Greenfields Hurdles on the last day of the Dunedin meeting and Radius Rod has been schooling well. FOXTON MEETING CUP WON BY GALTEEMORE.
