HARRIERS

MASTERTON CLUB’S RUN. The Masterton Harrier Club’s Saturday afternoon run began from the. Park Oval where the runners were divided into three packs, consisting of the Idle-Alongs, Medium and Fast packs. The Idle-Alongs, under the Club’s efficient secretary, Bob Bell, and composed of G. Fredericksen, I. Shaw, J. Warham, J. Haise, H. Carle and J. Pringle, were the first to proceed through Mawley Park to the end of Oxford Street, where the trail was picked up. About five minutes later R. Gully who had charge of J. Baikie, H. Harris, C. Pringle, R. Wanham, as No. 2 team set out. The fast pack, consisting, of R. Shaw, C. K. Long, C. Wright and W. Pullar, left about 10 minutes after the second team.

The trail led along Oxford Street, crossing over the railway line to follow the river until the butter factory bridge was reached, where the trail led the runners out on to Akura Road. The teams followed Akura Road for almost a mile past the crossroads proceeding towards Matahiwi. At this point a sharp detour to the right across the Waipoua river brought the runners back to the Mt. Bruce road at Mr H. Raynor's, where the trail led through his property along the edge of the Mahunga Golf links, over the railway line, and across ploughed paddocks to the cutting. From here the runners dropped down onto Oxford Street again and proceeded home through Mawley Park. In view of the club’s race with the Hutt Valley Club next Saturday, a team will be picked during the week and members are requested to be at the Oval each night for this purpose. Two notable absentees from the fast pack this week were G. Gregory and G. Sutherland, and their absence left the fast pack weak in numbers. A good opportunity to practise team-race was lost on account of this. John Haise was an outstanding runner in his pack and it is pleasing to see various athletes becoming prominent week by week. After the race next week visiting athletes will be entertained at afternoon tea. Following this a dance will be held in the Municipal Hall, and harriers can help to make this a success by attending in force. TURNBULL CUP CONTEST. The Olympic and Kiatere harriers held a contest at Masterton on Saturday for the Turnbull Cup, which resulted in a win for Kiatere by 103 points to 107 points. The first five men home were: E. Richardson (Olympic), 28min 36secs., 1; A. McDonald (Kiatere) 2; D. Sunderland (Olympic) 3; W. Burns (Kiatere) 4; T. Lovett (Olympic) 5.
