In May, 1888, in Greymouth, three members of prominent Catholic families were professed nuns of the Order of the Sisters of Mercy. The ceremony was performed by the Very Rev Bishop Grimes, of Christchurch. Seven years after their profession, the three sisters went to Christchurch, and, since the beginning of 1895, they have lived and laboured at St. Mary’s Convent, Colombo Street North. A few days ago the three —Reverend Mother Mary Cecelia (Sheedy), Mother Mary Mechtildes (Taylor), and Mother Mary Stanilaus (McDonnell) —celebrated the golden jubilee of their profession. In the morning in the convent chapel, the Very Rev Dr, V. Geaney, parish priest of St. Mary’s, celebrated High Mass, which was attended by members of the Community of the, Sisters of Mercy, and many friends. Later, the visitors were entertained at luncheon at the convent, and the jubilarians received many gifts and messages of congratulation from all parts of the Dominion. Among the guests were Mr J. Card and Miss H. Card, mayor and mayoress of Featherston.
