PARK BOWLING CLUB
A YEAR OF PROGRESS. IMPROVED FINANCIAL POSITION. The annual report of the Park Bowling Club is as follows:—The 1937-38 season has been one of continued prosperity to the club. Except for occasional wet days, the weather throughout the season was very favourable for our summer pastime, and the brilliant sunshine experienced was a big factor in adding to our enjoyment .of the various games. Unfortunately, just prior to the closing of the season at Easter, wet weather was experienced, and the pairs tournament scheduled for the holidays had to be cancelled, which was a disappointment to a large number of players who intended to participate. The weather did not improve for some time, and this delayed our top-dressing operations until the first week in May. lam pleased to say that this important work was, thanks to a willing band of workers, completed in one day, without expense to the club. - X ' Our club championship games were a source of much keen and interesting play, and the following were the winners of the various contests:— Champion singles, A. Osborne; champion pairs, A. Osborne, J. G. Shearer (skip); champion rinks, S. Vincent, B. Braggins, F. Dixon, H. Carr (skip); crafts medals, H. Anstice, A. Aydon, S. Vincent, J. G. Shearer (skip); Keatley medals, R. Emerson, H. G. Southey (skip); Spackman Cup, C. Leigh. Two triangular games between Featherston, Lyall Bay, and Park for the Kean trophy were held, first at Featherston, when that club retained-the trophy, and the second was played at Lyall
Bay, when the home club was victorious.. Both days were thoroughly enjoyed by those who took part. 'Several interesting games were played with the Masterton Club, for the Bell Shield, and Mutrie Cup, but although the Mutrie Cup was won by our representatives on two occasions both trophies are at present held by the Masterton Club. On the occasion of the annual visit of the Manawatu Centre, eight rinks played friendly games with our club, and were greatly enjoyed. These visits are looked forward to each year, and it is hoped that a good percentage of Park players will support , our centre when the call is made to repay the visit. A social was held at the close of the season, when the trophies won, were presented to the winners. This was well attended, and enjoyed by all. It is worthy of note, that a rink representing this club, consisting of Messrs A. Kilgour, H. G. Southey, J. C. Ewington and V. Taylor were runners-up in the Marlborough Easter tournament, being defeated in the final by a narrow margin. In this connection it may be mentioned that a miniature cup was presented to the rink by Mr and Mrs J. Baldwin, old residents of Masterton, now domiciled in Blenheim, in recognition of their performance. This cup has been presented to the Park Club by Mr Taylor on behalf of his team mates.
It is pleasing to record a considerable improvement in the financial position of the club. This result is largely due to the splendid work of those members who assisted with the screening of soil, top-dressing the green, rolling, and general maintenance. I wish to express my thanks to all those who participated in this work. I would suggest that the balance be earmarked as a nucleus of a fund for the improvement of our pavilion to bring it more in keeping with modern requirements. I wish also, to thank the hort. secretary, Mr Osborne, the hon. treasurer, Mr Gibson, the publicity officer, Mr Vincent, and the members of the committee for loyal support and co-operation during the season. Thanks are also due to the donors of trophies, the Borough Council, and Park Custodian for the assistance so freely rendered, and to the Press for publicity. I want to thank you, one and all, for the moral and material support extended to me during my term of office. You have generously overlooked by shortcomings, for which I am grateful. I have had nothing but kindness and consideration shown to me, and it has been a real pleasure to fill the high office to which you were good enough to elect me.—R. Wallace, president.
