Mr Herbert Metcalfe, the Old Street (London) magistrate, has ordered the posting of a notice on the door of a Bethnal Green shop saying that the shopkeeper has been convicted for exposing bad eggs for sale. The shopkeeper was fined £l5 with ten guineas costs for having in his possession and exposed for sale 30 eggs “unsound, unwholesome and unfit for food, contrary to Section 180 of the Public Health (London) Act, 1936.” The magistrate has ordered that the notice shall be fixed for 21 days at the shopkeeper’s expense. At the court hearing, Dr. Vynne Borlafid, Medical Officer of Health, said the eggs were offensive,, but not “terribly offensive.” The eggs were brought before the court and condemned. * The conviction is said to be the first of its kind.
