LEAGUE OF NATIONS

ADDRESS BY PROFESSOR WOOD.

“ATMOSPHERE OF INDECISION.”

The aims and ideals of the League of Nations were interestingly discussed by Professor F. W. Wood, of Victoria University College, in the course of an address at the annual meeting of the Masterton branch of the League of Nations Union last night. The president, Mrs T. R. Barrel’, occupied the chair and there was a fair attendance of members. Professor Wood was of the opinion that the League would even yet prove a deciding factor in the well-being of the nations. Referring to appeals made to the League for intervention by China and Spain, Professor Wood said the general feeling among members was not: “What can we do, but what can my country do that will not incriminate her.” Professor Wood dealt at some length with the effect on the League of the speech of Mr W. J. Jordan, New Zealand High Commissioner. Prior to that speech, he said, the attitude of the League was that nothing should be done to offend the European dictators. In such an atmosphere of indecision it was a splendid thing to hear a man who was willing to jtand up for his principles. Professor Wood had much more to say that was of interest concerning the League and its work and he made an appeal for increased support for the League of Nations Union, which was doing excellent work. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr J. Robertson, M.P.; vicepatrons, Dr J. A. Cowie, Messrs T. Jordan and G. R. Sykes; president, Mrs T. R. Barter; vice-presidents, the Revs E. J. Rich, F. Parker, Messrs G. W. Morice, W. A. Clarke, Mrs M. B. Thompson, Misses Shelton and O. R. Sutherland; executive council, Mesdames Miller, Engstrom, Misses Tankersley, Bradbury, the Rev D. McNeur, Messrs Wadham, Gouge, D. Fairbrother, A. Ross and Kimstry; auditor, Mr F. M. Cunningham; secretary, Miss M. Barrer; treasurer, Miss J. Elliott.
