INDOOR BASKETBALL

DEVELOPMENT. IN MASTERTON. TEAM TO CONTEST CHAMPIONSHIPS. Throughout New Zealand there has been in recent years considerable development in men’s indoor basketball, and in many centres keen interest is being centred on this very fine game. As a result a national organisation has been formed under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A., and annual championship contests are to be held between teams representing the various local Basketball Leagues. The first contest is to take place in the Wellington Y.M.C.A. during the King’s Birthday weekend, and about 10 or 12 teams from all over New Zealand will complete for the championship. Although League games have not yet been commenced in Masterton, a team has been got together and is planning to contest the championship on behalf of the Masterton League. This organisation is already under way and by the second week in June it is hoped to have regular weekly games of League basketball in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium. The games will be controlled by the Leaders’ Corps of the Y.M.C.A., and, in view of the annual championship events, will be played with rigid observance of the rules. Recently many of the business houses and sports bodies have, been circularised with a view to entering teams in the local competition, and already several entries have been received. Teams desiring to compete are urged to get into touch with the Y.M.C.A. office without delay. Arrangements can be made for practices to be held in the gymnasium before the season opens.
