RETURN SEASON OF “SAN FRANCISCO”
Next week that well-known picture “San Francisco,” will return to the Regent. It is a drama which has love interest, comedy and spectacle. Clark Gable has the rough and tough type of role in which his screen public like him best.. Jeanette MacDonald has the ideal part to give her opportunity to sing and when she sings there arcreasons for her singing for her songs are part of the plot. "San Francisco’ is the story of the Barbary Coast thirty years ago. opening on New Year’s Eve 1906, and continuing through one of the most disastrous dramas of the century, the San Francisco earthquake and fire. SANDY POWELL IN “IT’S A GRAND OLD WORLD.” Sandy's one interest in life is football in this picture which comes next Friday and we find him attending a football game when the film opens. Sandy r is on the dole, and is disgusted when the Labour Exchange finds him a job as stage hand at a theatre. Sandy finds two things at the theatre —the leading lady, Joan, with whom he falls in love—and a circus lion, which becomes the terror of his life. Sandy becomes a hero by accidentally catching the lion when it escapes and makes an enemy of the leading man by his attentions to Joan. He next wins a football pool, and wins £16,000. He proceeds to turn the theatre upside down, and buys Joan’s old ancestral home, which has been put up for auction. This he gives back to the family.. Sandy goes out to the ancestral home, -and finds what he thinks are gangsters plotting murder and all kinds of villainy. Actually it is the production of a picture in which Joan is starring, and Sandy ruins the scene through breaking in at the wrong moment. Thoroughly morose, Sandy creeps away, but Joan rushes out to bring him back, and in a burst of joy. they sing his favourite song, “It's a Grand Old World.”
The picture “While Parents Sleep,” coming to the Cosy next week, introduces a new and youthful team in Jean Gillie, the British and Dominions’ “discovery,” and Mackenzie Ward, whose talents as one of the cleverest juvenile leads in England are just being recognised. As Jerry and “Bubbles,” they career through a film packed with farcical and intriguing incident in brilliant style. The picture also brings to the fore a new and original screen comedian. He is Rebla, the famous despairing juggler, who has had the part of Bedworth the butler specially written in for him. This performance of the perfect butler who does all the wrong things in the right way, is one of the comedy high-spots of the film. Others in an exceptionally versatile cast are Ellis Jeffreys, Athole Stewart, Enid Stamp-Taylor, Davy Burnaby and Romilly Lunge.. The “extra” girl says: “Married life is like a bath —not so hot after you get used to it.”
