ROAD CYCLING

WAIRARAPA CLUB NOTES. (By “Sprocket.”) Saturday’s race over a distance of 16 miles was run under ideal conditions, and again the racing was of a high standard. The three limit men rode well and made good use of their handicaps. J. Gourlay crossed the line to win his first race, which was a fine effort. He should remember to work with his co-markers. L. Green, who was second, rode a sound race. He is showing promise of making a good rider. E. Lefort was unlucky and deserved to win. He was in third place and is improving with every race. J. McAliece, J. Brader and B. Harman again rode well but could not catch the leaders. R. Copp was going well but crashed at the turn. Fortunately he did not hurt himself. K. Woollett secured the fastest time from virtual scratch but had the misfortune to collide with another rider and as a result will be a spectator for a while. The members wish him a speedy recovery. Morris, Dooling and Graham were close up to the place-getters but could not quite make it. C. Dykes was also on virtual scratch with K. Woollett, but found the pace a bit too fast for him on the home run. With a bit more training he should soon be up with the rest of the field. At the conclusion of the race the riders were provided with afternoon tea at the residence of Mrs McAliece, and this was a fitting conclusion to an afternoon’s sport. " Next Saturday’s race will be over a distance of 33 miles, and will be a try-out for the 38-mile event which is to be held by the Manawatu Amateur Cycling Club on the King’s Birthday. A number of the local riders will make the trip to Palmerston North, and on their present form they should do well.
