FRACAS IN PRISON
ATTEMPT BY DESPERADOES TO ESCAPE. GUARD SERIOUSLY INJURED. SAN FRANCISCO. May 23. Two convicts were wounded and a guard was critically injured when three prisoners made an unsuccessful attempt to escape from Alcatraz prison. The prisoners, all of whom were bank robbers, struck a guard in the woodworking shop on the head with a hammer, fracturing his skull. They climbed up to the roof, where another guard shot two of them, the third surrendering.
