FLOOD RELIEF BALL
OUTSTANDING SUCCESS LAST NIGHT MUNICIPAL HALL CROWDED OUT. SUM OF OVER £5OO RAISED. In traditional manner, Wairarapa responded to the appeal for funds to assist the sufferers as the result of the Hawke's Bay floods and the Flood Relief Ball last night attracted one of the largest assemblages of dancers ever seen in the Municipal Hall. The big crowd, from all parts of the district, turned the occasion into a carnival gathering and from a festive and enjoyment point of view, the ball touched the very highest standards. Although it will be some days yet before the final result will be available, it is conservatively estimated that a - ■ sum of over £5OO was raised in the Wairarapa from donations, sale of tickets and admission to the ball. The splendid result was a fitting reward for the great work of the organising committee, and particularly for the efforts of the secretary, Mr D. Ward, who for the past fortnight has worked untiringly to ensure the financial success of the ball and the enjoyment of the patrons. The arrangements last night were capital and in spite of the huge attendance the dancing, supper and other details worked with mach-ine-like precision. The work of the committees, particularly the ladies’, cannot be eulogised too much. Their willingness to cooperate and to do everything possible to assist in the organisation and control of the ball was particularly gratifying. The voluntary help received from all sections of the communityalso played a big part in the outstanding success achieved. An indication of the great response to the appeal was contained in an announcement made last night that Eketahuna had contributed £63 to the fund. It is anticipated that similar results will come from other parts of the district.
Splendid music was provided by Udy’s, McKay’s and the Blue River Dance Band, all three orchestras giving their services free of charge. Mr D. Ward was an efficient M.C. The supper arrangements were excellent.
