SYSTEM OF VOTING
SHOULD BE UNIFORM. WANGANUI MAYOR’S COMMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, May 24. Comment on the strike-out system of voting as used at Wanganui during the recent local body poll was made by the mayor of Wanganui, Mr W. J. Rogers, to-day. Mr Rogers drew attention to the large number of informal votes recorded. “For many years I have favoured the cross system of voting,” Mr Rogers said. “I take strong exception to the fact that a few years ago what amounted to sectional legislation was agreed to, and large cities were given the right to introduce this system of voting. It has proved preferable to the strike-out system of voting, which small centres have been compelled to continue with.” Mr Rogers said there should be a uniform system of voting throughout the Dominion. He referred to the fact that information as to how Wellington electors were to vote had been given over the wireless the night before the election. Although he took no exception to that it emphasised that a uniform system of voting would be for the common good. He believed the new council would be agreeable to try to arrange for legislation to make this possible.
