SOUTH TYROL
RULES FOR GERMAN VISITORS. CLAIMS TO AREA SET OUT. Ten rules for Germans visiting the South Tyrol (which became Italian under the peace treaties), urging them to remember that it is a “German region to the core,” have appeared in a wall-case at Munch, states a Reuter message to the “Manchester Guardian.” They run as follows: 1. —lt is a disgrace to the nation to travel to Italy without seeing at least a part of South -"'/rol. 2. —lt is an insult to the people of South Tyrol for German citizens to speak Italian after crossing ’the Brenner. As far as Salurn (southernmost town of the former Austrian possession) south of Bozen is German language territory. 3. —ln order to judge conditions in the region it is not enough to gain a superficial impression of the towns to which a body of officials and workers artificially settled there are noisily trying to lend Italian characteristics. 4. —The peasants on the small holdings most of all need the German wanderer to comfort them in their fight. Here each of you must remember that the inhabitant of South Tyrol has become solemn and silent through the continual spying and persecution. 5. —As a member of a tourist party do not allow yourself to be accommodated in Italian hotels and inns. 6. —Do not write postcards from “Bolzano” (the Italian name of the town) or “Merano,” but from “Bozen” (the German name) and “Meran.” 7. Help to improve the condition of South Tyrol by becoming a member of the Association of Germans Abroad. In the next two rules is contained a warning against too boisterous behaviour, for the South Tyroleans will have to pay for it while the traveller is safely back in Germany. The last rule says: 10.—Once again, South Tyrol is a region which is German to the core. It is a piece of the best German land. The inhabitant of South Tyrol is a German; he belongs to the German people as you and I do. He is a fel-low-countryman. Do not let yourself be fooled about these basic facts by any Italian whitewash or any alien lie.
