ATTACKS MADE ON BRITAIN PREMIER’S SPEECH WELL RECEIVED. BUT CZECH RETIREMENT DESIRED. • (Recd This Day, noon) . BERLIN, May 23. The Press attacks Britain, the “Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung” declaring that London’s excitement almost caused a world conflagration. A calmer tone was apparent after Mr Chamberlain’s speech, though disappointment is expressed that Mr Chamberlain did not request the Czech’s to withdraw their troops from the frontier. FEAR OF INCIDENTS. (Recd This Day, 12.10 p.m.) BERLIN, May 23. Official German quarters emphasise that the situation is still tense and that a frontier incident might have farreaching consequences. Two alleged frontier, violations have been reported, namely the ’plane incident reported in an earlier message, and an allegation that Czech soldiers attempted to set fire to the Czech side of bridges at Ulrichsburg and Hohenfurts. ATTITUDE OF POLAND ALLEGED STATEMENT DENIED. AS TO FIGHTING AGAINST GERMANY. (Recd This Day, Noon.) LONDON, May 23. The Polish Embassy denies a report that Colonel Beck told Count von Moltke that .Poland would fight against Germany if she invaded Czechoslovakia. Colonel Beck has left for Sweden, indicating that he no longer regards the situation as critical. OPINION IN FRANCE. GRATITUDE TO BRITAIN. (Recd This Day, Noon.). PARIS, May 23. A Government spokesman states that M. Bonnet (Foreign Minister) conveyed to Sir E. Phipps (British Ambassador) the warmest appreciation of Britain’s attitude and added that he confidently anticipated a further improvement in the situation. The newspapers consider the situation has eased, largely thanks to Britain. The Press in Warsaw and in Prague takes a similar view.
