MR CHAMBERLAIN ON POSITION IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA
Hope that Settlement Efforts May Succeed MR ATTLEE’S RESTRAINED COMMENT (British Official Wireless.) (Recd This Day, 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, May 23. Concluding his statement regarding Czechoslovakia (reported in an earlier cablegram) the Prime Minister (Mr Chamberlain) said:—“At the moment the situation appears to have somewhat eased, and I understand the elections passed off quietly yesterday without untoward incident. When Mr Chamberlain sat down, the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Attlee), said: “It is inadvisable to press the Prime Minister for any fuller statement in view of the tension there is today, but I feel I may express the hope that these efforts to bring about a settlement may succeed without any deprivation of the just rights of Czechoslovakia.
