UNION MONEY STOLEN
ACCUSED SENT TO GAOL.
By Telegraph—Press Association. WANGANUI, May 23.
“I see by your list you have a number of previous convictions, and under these circumstances you cannot expect to be dealt with leniently,” said Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, today when sentencing George Burns, employed by the Public Works Department, to 12 months’ imprisonment. Burns was charged with the theft of a cashbox valued at 10s, and the contents of the box, £35.
Detective Baylis said Burns was employed at the Para Para, and had taken the box from the tent of one of the other workers, Charles O’Galligan. He had finally been located at Waitotara. O’Galligan was a union secretary, and the money had been collected from the men for a picnic.
Burns offered to give a sum of £lO due to him as wages as refund in part for the theft. The magistrate ordered this to be done.
