OUTLOOK OBSCURE

QL’AI D’ORSAY STATEMENT FRENCH FOREIGN MINISTER SUSPECTED. POLAND SOUNDED BY GERMANY. (Reed This Day, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON. May 23. The Australian Associated Press diplomatic correspondent says the Czechoslovakian situation continues to be easier, but danger unquestionably remains and the future is very obscure. The provocative statement by a “Quai D’Orsay spokesman” on Saturday, despite its having since being denied believed to have been inspired by M. Bonnet (French Foreign Minister), placed Britain in a delicate situation. It is gathered that Mr Neville Chamberlain’s efforts for peace are not only directed to Herr Henlein, but with equal firmness to France, Dr Benes

and Herr Hitler. Dr Benes continues to be much the key man as Herr Henlein. Meanwhile Mr Chamberlain’s statement to be made in the House of Commons about 3.45 p.m., is eagerly awaited. An important detail bearing on the situation is a conversation between the German Ambassador to Warsaw, Count von Moltke, and Colonel Beck. The former is seeking to ascertain Poland’s attitude in the event of German troops entering Czechoslovakia. It is reported if England and France are embroiled, the Poles will join them, which is a restraining influence on Marshal Goering, who is pressing Herr Hitler to take drastic military action against Czechoslovakia. MOMENTOUS MEETING CZECH PREMIER’S RECEIVES HERR HENLEIN. (Recd This Day,’ 9.30 a.m.) PRAGUE, May 23. The Prime Minister, Dr Hodza, received the Sudeten leader, Herr Henlein.
