ALCOHOLIC OPTIMISM

MAN WHO PRETENDED TO BE POLICE OFFICER. CHANCE GIVEN BY MAGISTRATE. (By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. “It was only clone in a spirit of alcoholic optimism," submitted counsel who appeared for Arthur Julius Creedon, sales manager, who was charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning with assuming the designation of a member of the Police Force. Detective-Sergeant Holmes said that Creedon was in a hotel on February 11 and struck up an acquaintance with a man named Murfitt, later asking him to come to a party. Murfitt borrowed six shillings from Creedon and on going out of the hotel they were met by another man with a car. They both entered the car and drove to a petrol station, where Creedon purchased a gallon of petrol. They then went to a club and Creedon and the other man left Murfitt sitting in the car. When they came out Murfitt was missing and Creedon drove to Murfitt’s home, where he told Murfitt’s mother he was a police officer and said that if she did not pay ten shillings as car hire he would be forced to issue a warrant for her son’s arrest. Both Mrs Murfitt and her daughter were under the impression that Creedon was a police officer. “I will give you a further chance,” said the Magistrate, Mr E. C. Levvey, in convicting Creedon and ordering him to come up for sentence within twelve months if called upon.
