A New Plymouth tram had to “rush” the Devon Street hill before it could reach the Liardet Street intersection. In its first attempt the tram could only reach Currie Street. It backed down the hill to Brougham Street and again charged the incline. A prospective passenger was waiting at the tram stop in the middle of the block, but the tram did not stop, and the passenger boarded the tram while it was in motion. The tram just reached the Liardet Street intersection. Inquiries revealed that the tram usually ran on two motors, but one motor was deficient, and there was not sufficient power in the other to take the tram up the hill without a flying start.
