A Wanganui tram was full, and when a girl entered to find no seat an elderly man offered her his. The girl plumped herself down without offering a word of thanks. The elderly man waited for some minutes to see if she would say anything, and when he found she had no intention of doing so, he said: “I beg your pardon, but you are sitting on something of mine.” The girl jumped up and the man quietly resumed his seat leaving her standing astonished, amid the smiles of the onlookers.
