HOCKEY
WAIRARAPA COMPETITIONS. GOOD STANDARD OF PLAY. Conditions were again ideal for the continuation of the Wairarapa Hockey Association’s fixtures on Saturday. In the senior division Kiwi had an easy win over Greytown and ran up 9 goals to nil. Kiwi are showing much better form now and a high class game is expected when they meet Carterton next Saturday. Dalefield had a good win over Wesley, and the team is getting back to its former good standard. The win on Saturday was rather a surprise as Wesley have been playing well and were expected to make a better’ showing. As expected, the game between College A and Wesley A in the junior division resulted in very interesting play. The boys put their best efforts into the game, and the standard of play at times reached a very high order. Wesley were the favourites, but were beaten by 4/2. College gained a two goal lead in the first spell, their forwards putting in some splendid work, and they had Wesley bustled. The second spell saw Wesley give a much better display. Faulknor scored a beautiful goal from the side for Wesley and the game was fast and spectacular. It looked as if Wesley would head College till Tooby and Jones broke away for College and Tooby sent in a hot one to the top of the net. Still two down Wesley tried hard to make up the leeway. Reeves came to light with a run from the 25 yard line and cut right through the defence to score. College scored again and they looked to have the game in safe keeping. However, the pace was telling on them and for the rest of the game were kept on the defence. Wesley lost the game through their forwards not keeping up with the ball. Several excellent scoring chances went astray through this fault. Wesley B and Greytown met at Lansdowne and although Wesley won, Greytown showed much improved form on their previous games. It was expected that College B would register a win against Dalefield, but they could only score 1 goal while Dalefield finished up with four. The following are the results of the games: — Senior Men. Kiwi 9 beat Greytown 0. Dalefield 3 beat Wesley 0. Carterton a bye. WOMEN’S GAMES. COLLEGE AT LAST. EXCELSIORS CLOSE CALL. A feature of the women’s hockey on Saturday was the match between Excelsior and Kiwi seniors. The game was played at the Lansdowne grounds and attracted a good crowd of spectators who were treated to the best exhibition of hockey seen in Masterton for many seasons.. On previous performances Excelsior looked sure to win as they eventually did by 3/2, but Kiwi gave them a big fright. Kiwi gained a lead in the first spell of 2/0, and it looked bad for Excelsior. Form told again, however, and Excelsior won by the odd goal after a hard fight. Excelsior owe their win to the determined play of their forwards, who in the second spell came to light with some solid play. However, the honours of the day went to the Kiwi backs who put up a splendid defence. Another big surprise was the result of the College—Greytown match on the College grounds. College played their best game this season to win by 2/1 after a very exciting game. Kia Ora won from Te Ore Ore by 4/0 after a very medicore display. Te Ore Ore fielded a full eleven for the first time this season. These players showed good form, and now that they have a full team should do much better. The results were as follows: — Senior. Excelsior 3 beat Kiwi 2. Kia Ora 4 beat Te Ore Ore 0. College 2 beat Grey town 1. Junior. Excelsior 6 beat College A 0. College B v. College C postponed. Entries for the tournament on June 6 will close on Wednesday.
