LOAN TO TURKEY

PART TO REPLACE FORTS IN DARDANELLES BRITAIN’S PRESENT AIM. HOPE OF SECURING ALLY. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Copyright. (Recd This Day, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, May 20. Negotiations have been nearly completed in London for a credit agreement with Turkey, involving £16,000,000. The Australian Associated Press says Turkey will receive £16,000,000 for armaments, including aeroplanes, submarines and the renewing of fortifications in the Dardanelles, identical with those which were fired on by Australian and New Zealand soldiers and the British Navy. The balance of £10,000,000 involves an ordinary trade transaction. This is in accord with Britain’s consistent aim. To stand well with the New Turkey and enable the modernising of her navy and air force and armaments is tantamount to assuring her former enemy being Britain’s ally in the event of a Mediterranean emergency.
