FALL LIKE NINEPINS

NORTHAMPTON WICKETS WARD THE DESTRUCTIVE AGENT. INNINGS WIN FOR AUSTRALIA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, May 20. The match between Australia and Northamptonshire was continued today. The home team did not make much headway against the bowling of the visitors, and only reached 194 in the first innings, and, following one, were all out for 135. Australia thus won by an innings and 135 runs. WICKETS FALL FAST. The weather was warmer and brighter when play was resumed. The remaining Northampton batsmen fell like ninepins adding only 54 to their overnight total. Ward was the destructive agent. With the first ball of the day he dismissed Timms. Brookes was often beaten by Ward’s greater spin today but managed to hang on till he reached 37. The other batsmen were weak and hesitant by comparison with the opening pair. ‘ ■ LITTLE CLASS SHOWN. Northants’ second innings was virtually a repetition of the first. The early batsmen, Nelson, Greenwood and Snowden, played good cricket, but the others showed little class against the steady bowling of the Australians. Greenwood alone batted with vigor. His team-mates seemed to be trying to avert an innings defeat. HAILSTORM STOPS PLAY. A hailstorm stopped play for fifteen minutes but even this could not prevent an Australian victory. The New Zealanders O’Brien and Merritt were out as the result of weak strokes. The ninth wicket stand between James and Partridge realised 40 runs, the best of the innings. Australia won with half an hour to spare. AN AMUSING INCIDENT. Fleetwood-Smith was involved in an amusing incident. Prior to the match he was accidentally locked in his hotel room. The manager was unable to unscrew the lock and he was finally released by the aid of a jemmy manipulated by the local police. The scores are as follow: — AUSTRALIA.
