PHOSPHATE SUPPLIES

STUDY URGED BY PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT. IN MESSAGE TO CONGRESS. (Recd This Day, 10.10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 20. President Roosevelt, in a message to Congress, suggested the appointment of a joint committee to study United States resources of phosphates, a vital fertiliser and an essential material in the manufacture of munitions. Mr Roosevelt said the total world supply of phosphate rock was estimated at 17,200 million tons, of which 7,200 millions were in the United States. The bulk of the remainder was controlled by England, France and Russia. He stressed the necessity for developing a policy of conservation of resources for the benefit of this and coming generations.
