POTENTIAL DANGER
ITALIAN NAVAL BASE v IN SOMALILAND PLANS BEING CONSIDERED MENACE TO BRITISH TRADE ROUTES LONDON, May 20. Great importance is attached to General Teruzzi's visit to Italian. East Africa, for which place he sailed yesterday, accompanied by several officials, states the Rome correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.” It is understood that, in addition to speeding plans for the extraction of Abyssinia’s minerals and other resources, General Teruzzi will examine the possibility of constructing a naval base in Italian Somaliland for the protection of Italian interests in the Indian Ocean. The naval correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” points out that the establishment of a naval base in this region would constitute a potential danger to Britain’s eastern trade routes, and might also partly nullify the strategic advantage that would be gained by sending shipping via the Cape in the event of trouble in the Mediterranean.
