Exquisite Fans.
Enshrining in their colourful and dainty beauty the grace of a bygone age, 15 French period fans were yesterday presented to the National Art Gallery, Wellington. Dating from the reign of Louis XIV to that of Napoleon 111., the fans are each gems of their kind, and reflect very beautifully the manners, costumes and styles of the periods covered. In the presence of some of the trustees of the National Art Gallery and members of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, these artistic treasures were handed over to the trustees by Mr John Makower and Miss Kathleen Makower, son and daughter respectively of the donors in London. In making the presentation Mr Makower remarked upon the fact that his father, who has visited New Zealand on two or three occasions, was very much interested in the country, for which he had a very warm regard.
