COMPOSITE PLANE

TAKEN OVER BY IMPERIAL AIRWAYS FLIGHT TO CANADA IN JUNE LONDON, May 19. Imperial Airways, after Air Ministry tests, have taken over the Maia and Mercury. The Maia is due to fly to Canada at the end of June, after an endurance fight around Britain. It was reported on May 10 that the Maia and the Mercury, with the latter carrying a full Atlantic load of 25,500 lb., separated successfully at an altitude of 3000 feet during an Air Ministry test. The Mercury jettisoned 900 gallons of petrol, which would largely have been consumed on a trans-Atlantic flight, before alighting.
