CURE FOR CRIME
THREE MONTHS “IN CLINIC.” The day when punishment was thought to be the only cure of crime is over. In future criminals will most likely be given three months “in clinic,” instead of three months “in clink.” For six years the Institute of Scientific Treatment of Delinquency has been quietly carrying on its work of offering a new approach to the problems of crime and the 'treatment of delinquents. Recently, Lord Roche, a former Lord of Appeal, opened the institute’s new clinic in Portman street. London, where offenders against the law may go for guidance and help. “In the great majority of cases,” he said, “the difficulty lies not so much in the decision as to guilt or innocence, but in the decision as to what sentence to impose or to abstain from imposing.”
Among the equipment is apparatus which enables doctors and psychoanalysts to delve into the motives and impulses of the criminal, to test intelligence, temperament, vocational ability.
