“I have learnt more about the character and contemporary life of the nations I have visited from seeing their plays on the stage than from any other single activity,” said the Earl of Lytton in a recent broadcast talk. “This is true not only of European countries, but of Japan and China also, where modern drama is not yet so fully developed as in Europe. Drama is wonderful revealing of national character, both from the performance of the actors on the stage and the reception of their performance by the audience.”
